Best Fitness Video Games in 2026: Switch, VR and Phone

For most people the best fitness video game is Ring Fit Adventure on Nintendo Switch, because it mixes strength-style moves with cardio and adjusts to your level. If you own a Meta Quest, The Thrill of the Fight 2 gives the hardest workout and Beat Saber the most fun per minute. Fitness Boxing 3 is the easiest daily habit on Switch, and Just Dance 2026 Edition is the pick for a living room full of people.

The rest of this guide covers what each game actually trains, what hardware you need in 2026, and where games stop being enough.

How hard do fitness games actually work you? #

Some are real workouts and some are closer to a brisk walk. In a 2018 lab study that measured oxygen use in 41 adults, the original Thrill of the Fight averaged 9.3 METs, which counts as vigorous exercise, while a rhythm game in the same study averaged about 5.5 METs, which is moderate (Games for Health Journal, 2018). An indirect calorimetry study of Supernatural put both its Flow and Boxing modes in the vigorous range (JMIR Serious Games). At the other end, Beat Saber measured as light intensity in children aged 8 to 12 (Games for Health Journal, 2025).

Two things follow. Effort and difficulty setting change the numbers a lot, so the same game can be a warm-up or a hard session. And don’t trust the calorie counter on your headset or watch; one study found consumer estimates during VR gaming differed significantly from lab measurements (PMC, 2023).

For reference, the CDC recommends adults get 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, plus at least two days of muscle-strengthening work (CDC). Most games cover the first part well. Very few cover the second.

Ring Fit Adventure: best all-round fitness game #

Ring Fit Adventure is a full RPG where you run in place to move through the world and beat enemies with squats, presses, planks and yoga poses. The Ring-Con, a flexible ring you squeeze and pull, measures resistance, and a leg strap tracks your running and leg moves. Difficulty scales, so a beginner and a regular exerciser can both get a solid session.

It still works on Switch 2, with a catch. The new Joy-Con 2 don’t fit the Ring-Con or leg strap, so you need a pair of original Switch Joy-Con paired wirelessly, plus a charging grip, charging stand or an old Switch to charge them (Nintendo Support). Nintendo sells the Ring-Con only bundled with the game.

Who should skip it: anyone expecting it to build serious muscle. The Ring-Con’s resistance is light, which is fine for toning and endurance but won’t replace progressive lifting.

Fitness Boxing 3: best for a daily 15-minute habit #

Fitness Boxing 3: Your Personal Trainer launched on Switch in December 2024. You punch and dodge to the beat of instrumental tracks while one of six voiced trainers coaches you, and there’s a seated mode for days when standing isn’t an option. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrived on July 16, 2026, adding a mode that speeds up each round, sharper scoring and USB camera support so you can check your form against the instructor (Nintendo).

It’s built for consistency more than variety. If you get bored by repetition, rotate it with something else.

Just Dance 2026 Edition: best for groups #

Just Dance 2026 Edition came out on October 14, 2025 for Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and runs on Switch 2 through backward compatibility. Most platforms use the free Just Dance Controller phone app to track you, and a newer camera mode lets the phone’s camera follow your whole body in single-player (Ubisoft). Up to six people can play locally.

The phone-in-hand method mostly tracks the hand holding the phone, so you can score well while barely moving your legs. Dance full-out and it’s honest cardio.

Beat Saber: best fun per minute in VR #

You slice flying blocks to music with two sabers while ducking and sidestepping walls. On higher difficulties with lots of walls it gets sweaty, and it’s the game that got many people to try VR fitness. Keep expectations realistic: on normal settings it’s closer to light or moderate exercise.

Platform matters. Beat Games stopped releasing updates and songs for PS VR and PS VR2 in June 2025, and PlayStation multiplayer ended on January 21, 2026. New music still comes to Meta Quest and Steam (UploadVR).

The Thrill of the Fight 2: hardest workout in VR #

The sequel to one of the most tiring games in VR, The Thrill of the Fight 2 left early access with a single-player career mode, AI sparring with adjustable rounds, and online matches (Road to VR). It runs on Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro. Rounds feel like real boxing rounds, which is exactly why it works. Start with short rounds and give yourself space; people do punch walls.

Supernatural: wait for the relaunch #

Supernatural had the best coaching in VR, but 2026 has been messy. Meta stopped adding new content in January, then handed the app back to its original founders, who formed Supernatural Health. The Meta-run version ends on December 3, 2026, and existing accounts don’t carry over automatically. The new app is due on the Meta Horizon Store in the US and Canada this fall at $20 a month or $200 a year, double the old price (UploadVR). If you’re new, wait for reviews of the relaunched version before paying.

FitXR: best class-style subscription #

FitXR is a studio-class app with more than 1,000 on-demand workouts across boxing, combat, HIIT, dance, Zumba and sculpt classes. It costs $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year in the US, with a 7-day free trial (FitXR Help Center). It suits people who like instructor-led classes and want variety without a gym.

Where fitness games fall short #

Games are great for cardio and poor for strength. Controllers weigh almost nothing, and Ring Fit’s resistance tops out quickly, so they can’t give you the progressive load that builds muscle over months. We cover that in detail in can VR workouts build muscle?.

A common split is games for cardio days and a simple lifting routine two or three days a week. If you want the lifting side to feel like a game too, One Gym Man is a free workout log where logged bench, squat, deadlift, overhead press, rows, push-ups, sit-ups and runs build your character’s Strength and Agility for turn-based monster fights. It doesn’t track console or VR sessions, so those stay in the game.

Are fitness games good for stress? #

They can be, for the same reason any enjoyable exercise helps: you’ll do it often enough for the benefits to show up. Rhythm and boxing games also demand enough focus to pull your attention off whatever is bothering you. Our guide to exercise for stress relief covers what the research supports and how much movement it takes.

Frequently asked questions #

What is the best fitness game on Nintendo Switch? #

Ring Fit Adventure is the most complete, with strength-style moves, cardio and an RPG story. Fitness Boxing 3 is simpler and better for a quick daily session. Just Dance 2026 Edition is best when several people want to play.

Does Ring Fit Adventure work on Switch 2? #

Yes, but only with original Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con and leg strap, because Joy-Con 2 don’t fit. You’ll also need a way to charge the old Joy-Con, such as a charging grip or stand, since the Switch 2 can’t charge them.

Can fitness video games replace the gym? #

For cardio, they can cover most of the weekly recommendation if you play hard enough. For strength, no. You still need exercises you can make progressively harder, such as lifting or harder bodyweight variations, on at least two days a week.

Which VR fitness game burns the most calories? #

Boxing-style games have measured highest in lab studies: the original Thrill of the Fight averaged 9.3 METs in adults, and Supernatural’s modes also measured as vigorous. Actual burn depends on your body size and effort, and headset estimates are often wrong.

Is Beat Saber still supported on PS VR2? #

You can still buy and play it, including songs released before June 18, 2025, but it gets no new songs or updates on PlayStation. PlayStation multiplayer ended on January 21, 2026. Quest and Steam versions still receive new content.
